The purpose of this study is to investigate attitudes of Korean elders toward the welfare reform concerning legal immigrants. The new law restricted the participation of legal immigrants in the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. Under the new law, most immigrant elders would lose their SSI benefits if they don¢¥t have US citizenship. The data (n = 95) came from Korean elders, 60 years or older, living in Los Angeles. SES, length of residence in the US, and acculturation were expected to affect the attitudes of the sample. Findings show that most respondents (93%) already heard about the welfare reform on legal immigrants; and those who were male (89%), married (83%), non-citizens (85%) and less acculturated are more likely to oppose the welfare reform. Implications for research and policy are discussed.
